DESCRIPTION

1. My Son Sanctuary Details

1.1.  Cham people – the true owners of My Son temple complex

A couple of thousand years ago, the long S-shaped country of Vietnam today was governed by three different groups of peoples: the Vietnamese in the north, the Chams in the central and  the Funans in the south, respectively.

The Chams or Cham people are popularly believed to have crossed the sea from the coasts of present-day west Borneo (Indonesia) to Central Vietnam as early as the 3rd BC century. Naturally, the language they speak is Austronesian that is close to Malay.

1.2.  Champa kingdom – the home of My Son Sanctuary Vietnam

By 192 AD, the very many clans of Cham people stood up together to overthrow the Chinese occupation and successfully founded their own kingdom: Champa.

From the 11th century to the end of the 15th century, Champa reached its peak. In the later time, the inner conflicts and growing power of the Vietnamese put a harsh pressure on the kingdom. Gradually, its lands were taken by the neighbor.

Since 1832 AD, Champa disappeared from the political map.

1.3.  My Son temple site – the valley of Hindu gods

As a result of trading with India, Champa developed its indigenous beliefs with borrowed spiritual, social and political models from the Indian world. Intentionally, they erected My Son temples to worship Hindu deities, notably Shiva, and their kings.
